“A House as Big as You Need and Land as Far as You Can See”

The exhibition delves into Maro Fasouli's ongoing exploration of traditional weaving and architecture, drawing inspiration from anonymous folk art and the wild, rocky landscape of Exo Meria in Tinos. The phrase "A House as Big as You Need and Land as Far as You Can See" is a traditional Greek expression that reflects a philosophy of life regarding space and ownership. In essence, it suggests that one should have a house only as large as needed to live comfortably, and land as vast as one can manage or utilize. This symbolic saying encourages moderation and warns against the excessive pursuit of material wealth and possessions. In this allegorical exploration, Fasouli employs her works—some resembling tapestries or three-dimensional collages of yarn and fabric, while others extend into space or onto walls as sculptures—as a narrative tool to examine the relationship between the human body and space.

Perfect opportunity for a visit at “Ioannis Despotopoulos and the Bauhaus” at Athens Conservatoire
Ioannis Despotopoulos is the only Greek architect to have lived in Weimar in the Bauhaus era. During his two years in the city, he came into direct contact with the principles, teaching, and staff and students of the famous art school. His experiences at the Bauhaus and in the overall atmosphere generated by the Weimar Republic had a catalytic effect on his later work. Rather than viewing the Bauhaus as a “style”, he thought of it as a broader way of looking at things and of understanding reality. Moreover, he saw architecture and the profession of the architect as a means of achieving goals that would benefit society. He implemented these ideas in his 1959 design for the Athens Cultural Centre and in the “Odeion” conservatoire, the only building to be realised as part of this project.
